Don’t look back in anger

I got caught up in disagreement on social media this week. It was an acquaintance whom I met at an event. It started with me commenting on a post about a divisive issue. It quickly dissolved into the other person throwing rocks. I was patient, defending my perspective while trying to respect the other’s point of view. I tried “let’s agree to differ,” but they weren’t buying. It ended when the other person went into a full-on rant, from which the dialogue was not recoverable. Interestingly, this has happened to me before; the same subject, but in a face-to-face setting rather than social media.

In both cases, sad to say, the solution was to walk away. If it’s social media, unfriend or disconnect or if it’s a physical encounter, leave the room or the building.

The learning out of this for me, and perhaps for you, is how to deal with the aftermath. It’s about personal productivity. Why? You can’t get back energy spent on ‘looking back in anger,’ so don’t waste time waiting for it to ‘fade away.’

Instead, be mindful and focus on now. Is there anything to learn from the exchange? Do you need to change your opinion because of what was said to you or what you said? If you’ve changes to make, work out a brief action plan. Then, or if you’ve no changes to make, move on. Use the energy you’ve saved for something much more constructive.
